Fellow hams/WARFA members.
This is Russ Williams, KW6T (formerly W6OHM). I have been checking into WARFA for about 4 years now and have enjoyed hearing everyone and QSO'ing with some members from time to time.
Today, while surfing the WARFA website, I came across the
Silent Key Memorial for 2008 and played the videos. My dear folks, I was moved to tears at the respect and reverence each of you displayed for our fellow hams who had passed during the year. I am at a loss for words to convey to you what that meant to me even though I did not know the SK's personally and had only checked in with a few, namely K6ERI and KD6SA. I knew WARFA was a great organization, but I now realize WARFA is more of a family and is one of the finest groups of people I have had the privilege of being associated with.
May the spirit of WARFA live on for all time!
My thanks and my best 73 to each of you and to all of WARFA..
P.S. I could not find email addresses for Marcia, Phil and Earl (KE6FKL, W6WAG and N6ECE), so please send my best regards to them as well if you have the opportunity.
Most sincerely,
Russ Williams KW6T
Howdy Bill - I have checked into the Friendship Net a couple of times
recently - last night was 2nd time. I like the style of the net and you
guys seem to be able to hear me - at least for now! Pip squeak mobile (IC
706)
I am from Montana - have HF station there but don't seem to be able to find time when I am there due to my business. I do not operate The Grubstake in the winter, hence I "Wander". My mobile got "T-boned" a few years ago and I just recently installed the 706 into my newer Subaru (actually I brot the rig with and put it in at my sister's in Utah). I listen more than I talk but just happened upon "your" net.
I am presently at an Internet cafe in Aptos CA - just checked out the WARFA.org web site - and got your e-mail there. Also your QRZ.com page.
My main activity while wandering like I am doing now is geocaching - lots of hams do that. Also like visiting historical sites.
You may enjoy reading my
Ham Radio Biography on the grubstake home page
below (also the beginning is on QRZ.com).
For three years out of college, I was an engineer at Heathkit (I suspect you know about that company - Hi hi) then went self employed and have been ever since.
Warning: I may check in a few times via CW on this trip - especially as I get south and east more!

First published in Electric Radio, December, 2008. Used with permission from publisher. Michael Ditmore (W7HUT) contributed this classic Christmas cartoon for ER this year, and Michael will be doing more cartoons for the magazine as time permits. Michael is our southern relay for Thursday night. If you really want to find out about Michael, go to QRZ and be very surprised.
Note from Michael: This was done as a Christmas tribute to one of my childhood heroes - Gil Gildersleeve, W1CJD, who did so very many wonderful cartoons (over 1500!) for QST over the nearly 40 years spanning roughly 1930 - 1966.
This was my take on a QST cover from December 1957 - I was a novice, WN7HUT and never forgot it...
Note for new hams: The guy wearing the AMI shirt is dreaming of vintage amateur radio gear from the 1950s.
